After two weeks of controversy, speculation, and multiple flip-flops on immigration matters, the Hillary Clinton campaign has finally taken a position on granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. Her position is as follows: I support Governor Spitzer's decision today to withdraw his proposal," Clinton said in a statement. "As president, I will not support driver's licenses for undocumented people and will press for comprehensive immigration reform that deals with all of the issues around illegal immigration including border security and fixing our broken system." The problem for Hillary Clinton here is that she is only taking her current stance on this issue because she knows that an overwhelming majority of the American voting public do not support licenses for illegal immigrants. I guess this decision was made in the general election mode for her. Anyway, Hillary does not believe in her current stance. We know this to be true because in previous presidential debates she has boldly said that she supports sanctuary cities and feels that undocumented workers and government officials have "no choice" but to ignore our federal immigration laws. Clinton has also expressed a desire to create a system that brings illegal immigrants "out of the shadows." That kind of system would include provisions like giving illegals licenses or some kind of ID card so they can work. I find it quite remiss that in her statement Clinton expresses a desire to secure the border and fix our broken immigration system. After all, what legislation has the junior senator from New York introduced that would help secure our borders? What corporate business groups has she stood up to in order to stop the illegal hiring of these undocumented workers? The answer, of course, to both of those questions is none. It is extremely difficult to stand up to corporate business lobbyists no matter who you are, however, it is even more difficult when it is these very same corporate lobbyists who are filling your pockets with campaign cash. But of course, that does not affect a seasoned Washington insider like Hillary Clinton; she is immune to that kind of influence. The exciting news in this whole situation is that there is still time before the Iowa caucuses for Hillary to slip back into primary mode and change her position once again. If I was a strategist for Obama, Edwards, or any of the Republicans, I would secretly plant a questioner at Clinton's next campaign stop, and have the questioner ask her how she feels about John Kerry and flip-floppers!
